Lawn Seeding 101

If you are planning to grow your lawn, it is important that you do the necessary steps to make it look good. Along with this, the task of lawn seeding is necessary. This is because seeding your lawn is usually the economical option for establishing your new yard. Unless you want to spend so much money, then you can skip out on this step.

When it comes to the task of seeding your lawn, the time to do it will depend on the grasses you intend to grow. Such in the case of warm season grasses you must seed your lawn starting the months of May, June or July. On the other hand, the grasses for cool season need to be seeded late in August or in September.

Before the real grass seeding takes place, it is important that a soil test will be taken in order to determine what recommendations you will need for fertilizer and lime. You must also check if your area has any hard to control, persistent weeds that are growing uncontrollably.

Your lawn might even need to use a non-selective herbicide a number of weeks before you can start seeding. At the same time, you may also have compacted soil that still requires tilling to a depth of 6-8 inches. For this, you will need to use 2-3 inches of organic matter layer. The soil will need to settle and be raked in order to spot the low spots.

If you don’t check, you won’t be able to see what you’re lawn needs for a successful lawn maintenance procedure. This is why checking and being familiar with the structure of your lawn is an important step if you are still growing it. By doing so, you can make sure that the lawn seeding task of your yard has been successfully done.
